In 1908, real estate investors John Edward Chilberg (1867-1954) and James Crawford Marmaduke (1871-1945) opened the New Washington Hotel on the northeast corner of Stewart Street and Second Avenue in what is now Seattle's Belltown neighborhood. As the city's premier hotel for several decades the New Washington Hotel welcomed many prominent guests over the years, including four U. S. Presidents and Elvis Presley. In 1963 the 13-story building was sold to the Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle as a residence for senior citizens, and its name was changed to the Josephinum. As of 2018 the Josephinum remains an apartment building for low-income residents and recently homeless individuals. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The brochure seen here advertises the New Washington Hotel, located "In the Heart of Everything," just five minutes from either steamship or railroad terminals. Several photographs feature the elegant Italian Renaissance Revival Style architecture and decor, and rates are listed as between $2.50 to $4.00 per night for one person. Adolph Daniel Schmidt, Sr. (1886-1947), was manager of the hotel from about the time this brochure was printed until 1933, when his family, owners of Olympia Brewery in Tumwater, divested themselves of their hotel investments and returned to brewing.
