Program
The Seattle Referee, November 3, 1916
Contact MOHAI to OrderThe issue of "The Seattle Referee" pictured here was published as a program for a boxing match between William August "Willie" Hoppe (b.1890) of San Francisco and "Smilin' George" Ingle of Seattle. The date on this program, November 3, 1915, is a misprint. The bout actually took place on Friday, November 3, 1916, at the Dreamland Pavilion in Seattle, and ended in a draw.
The evening included four additional bouts and was referred to as a "smoker," or a series of fights billed as amateur fights or "sparring sessions" between gyms but which were more often professional prize-fights hosted by a private club in a city which prohibited prize-fighting. In this case, the evening was hosted by the Metropolitan Lumberman's Club of Seattle.
