"Aida" is an opera in four acts composed by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni (1824-1893). Set in Egypt, it was commissioned by and first performed at Cairo's Khedivial Opera House on December 24, 1871. The opera has since been performed thousands of times all over the world, and remains a central piece in the operatic canon.

The program pictured here is from a series of performances given from August 9-12 at University of Washington Stadium (now Husky Stadium), which at the time had a seating capacity of 30,000. Large outdoor space was needed to accommodate the large-scale pageant-style production popular at the time. Sponsored by the Wayfarer Pageant Society, an organization of Seattle businessmen that guaranteed the expenses of the production, the cast included 79 actors and dancers, 412 members of the chorus and orchestra, and 21 conductors, directors, and managers.
