The Seattle Skating Club (SSC) was formed in 1931, and for at least 10 years held an ice skating exhibition event called Iceparade. Proceeds from the event went to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's Annual Christmas Fund which provided hot lunches, clothing, and medical and dental care throughout the year for under-privileged children attending public or parochial schools in Seattle and King County. The event was sponsored by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Catholic Mothers' Clubs, and the Seattle-King County Parent-Teacher Councils, and sanctioned by the U. S. Figure Skating Association.

Many local ice skating stars performed in the 1961 Ice Parade, including Cynthia Kauffman and Ronald Kauffman, and Judianne Fotheringill and Jerry Fotheringill. National acts such as the Broadway Rhythmaires performed, as well as "Internationally Famous Ice Comedians" Hamms and Riggs. At the time of the show the local community was grieving the loss of three club members from Renton, skaters Ila Ray Hadley and Ray Hadley, and their step-mother and coach Linda Hart. The three were killed in a plane crash in February en route to the 1961 World Figure Skating Championships in Prague. The Iceparade program has a memorial to the skaters on the last page, and as of 2018, SSC continues to dedicate a trophy in their honor at SSC's annual Ice Fest competition.
