In July 1933, a fleet of Navy ships paid its annual visit to Seattle. The city celebrated with Fleet Frolic Week, a celebration of dances, parades, games, and a carnival. In 1932, the city held a Fleet Week song-writing contest for Seattle composers. Rosetta Perry Gibbon (1904-1988), wife of a Seattle Times editorial writer, was the winner, but time was too short to publish and distribute her song. The Seattle Chamber of Commerce decided to sponsor the piece as the official song for the 1933 Fleet Week.
The sheet music was distributed by Capitol Music Company, Seattle. Handwritten notes on the cover list where sheet music and recordings were available: Rhodes 10-cent store, Green's 10-cent store, Bob Nichol's Record Shop, Countner's, and Sherman & Clay.
