Langston Hughes’ “Black Nativity,” first performed Off-Broadway in 1961, opened in Seattle in 1998. Rev. Samuel McKinney (1926-2018) of the Mount Zion Baptist Church was the narrator, and Pastor Patrinell “Pat” Wright (1944-) and her Total Experience Gospel Choir provided the music. The show has been a popular part of Seattle’s holiday season ever since.
In 2007 the show marked its 10th Anniversary with a month of performances at the Intiman Theatre. The colorful cover of the program shows images of Rev. McKinney (upper right), Pat Wright (right), the choir (lower left) and other performers.
