The 14th Avenue South Bridge, later renamed the South Park Bridge, connected Seattle with the nearby South Park neighborhood. Spanning the Duwamish River, it was a double-leaf bascule bridge, meaning that the two halves of the road deck opened from the middle.

The bridge, shown here, opened in 1931, and by 2009 carried some 20,000 vehicles per day. It was a vital link for manufacturing, aviation and port activities, but its supports were crumbling, and the 2001 Nisqually Earthquake only made things worse. Plans were made to replace it, and a new South Park Bridge opened in 2014.
