Redhook Ale Brewery was established in 1981 by Gordon Bowker and Paul Shipman in a garage in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood. One of the company's most popular beers, Ballard Bitter, was first brewed in 1985, when craft beer was still a very small market. However, the popularity of Ballard Bitter soon allowed Redhook to expand operations into a former trolley barn in the nearby Fremont neighborhood.
The poster pictured here advertises Redhook's Ballard Bitter and emphasizes the brand's imagery and motto ("Ya Sure Ya Betcha") which were an homage to Ballard's Scandinavian roots. This poster does not label Ballard Bitter as an IPA-style beer as it is now. That designation was added in the 1990's when IPA's became more popular.
