This image is of the Bekins building on 12th and Madison, which was constructed with Superior Portland Cement. The Bekins Van Lines, Inc., was founded in 1891 by brothers John and Martin Bekins in Indianapolis, growing to become the largest household moving company in the United States. Bekins was acquired by Wheaton World Wide Moving in 2012. The Bekins building in Seattle still stands at 1111 East Madison, operating the Seattle University campus store and a self storage facility.
The Pacific Coast Cement Company was located on a 20-acre site along the East Duwamish waterway near Charleston Street from 1928-1947. Cement is mixed with sand, water and gravel to produce concrete.
