In 1871, developer Julius Horton purchased property on the Duwamish River formerly owned by the Luther Collins family, who had been pioneers in the Duwamish Valley. In 1890, Horton incorporated the area, naming it Georgetown after his oldest child. The Hortons built a large home at 119 South Bateman, which may be where this photograph was taken. Julius Horton was the brother of early Seattle banker Dexter Horton (1825-1904).
Here, members of the Horton family gather with friends in a parlor. Julius Horton (1834-1904) sits third from the left. His wife, Anna Emily (Bigelow) Horton (1844-1911), sits next to him, holding a toddler. Local schoolteacher Harry Bateman sits second from the right, reading a book. The woman at the far right may be Dora Estelle (Horton) Carle (1866-1942). The others in the image are unidentified, however some of them may be the other Horton children: George Monroe Horton (1865-1927), Mabel Maude (Horton) Edlund (1874-1898), Howard Dexter Horton (1880-1956); or wards: William H Collins (1881-) and Edward Collins (1886-). The parlor is highly decorated, with piano, lace curtains, statuary, and family portraits.
