Order an ImageThis image shows the Black Elks club on Jackson Street between Maynard and Seventh Avenues. The Elks fraternal order was racially segregated until the late 20th century and the local Black chapter in Seattle was a popular nightclub with a racially mixed, but mostly Black, clientele. After arriving in Seattle in 1948, Ray Charles played his first regular gig as a musician at the Black Elks club.
