Order an ImageIsabelle “Izzy” Donaldson was born to a family of Black coal miners in Roslyn, Washington. She met photographer Al Smith, Sr. in 1939, just before he set sail on a monthlong trip. They wrote each other letters, and in 1941, after Al returned, they married.
Al Smith took this photo of Izzy around 1958, before a house party. The Smiths had an active social life that revolved around monthly parties in the homes of close friends. With good food, music, and drink, these events offered a way to connect with friends and meet new members of the community.
