Here, Smith photographs his brother-in-law Dr. Donald Phelps, with son Michael Phelps on his shoulders, during a family picnic to Mount Rainier National Park, around 1955. Dr. Phelps was a prominent educator who later became the chancellor of Seattle Central Community College.
