Seafair Royalty have been a part of Seattle's annual ten-day-long celebration since the festival's beginnings in 1950. Young women are chosen for the court to represent their neighborhood and/or ethnic community and are awarded academic scholarships. Throughout the summer, Seafair Royalty participate in festival events and perform knighting ceremonies recognizing outsltanding citizens in the Seattle area.

The Chinatown - International District held its own festivities as an integral part of the Seafair Celebration, with the Filipino, Chinese, Japanese and Black communities each selecting its own Queen and princesses. In this photo, Victor Rabel, in his role as Seafair's King Neptune, has just crowned the queen of the Black community, Adelia Avery, as Miss International Center, in a ceremony at the Civic Auditorium. At right is Sumi Matsui, queen of the Japanese community, and second from left is Foon Woo, queen of the Chinese community. Just out of the photo, at right, is Rosita deLeon, Filipino community queen. Mayor Allan Pomeroy, third from right, claps his hands.
