In addition to his Seattle jazz club images, photographer Al Smith also took photos of groups and events in the city’s black community. On this occasion, he photographed the pallbearers at the funeral of Al Herre, a member of the Royal Esquires, as they carried his coffin to a LaSalle hearse.

The Royal Esquire Club was founded in 1947 as a place where African American men could socialize and plan a variety of projects to support the community. These activities continue as of 2025. When this photograph was taken, the club was located in Seattle’s Central District, but it has since moved to Rainier Avenue S. in the Columbia City neighborhood.
