In 1947 Thurgood Marshall came to Seattle to address members of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The event was held on Sunday, March 16, at Mount Zion Baptist Church on 19th Avenue and East Madison Street in Seattle's Central District neighborhood. A few years earlier, Marshall founded and became the executive director and counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. He would go on to become the first African American Supreme Court Justice in 1967.
