Thirty-seven unidentified women pose on the stairs outside Garfield High School. The women are attendees at the 24th Biennial Convention of the National Association of Colored Women Clubs (NACWC), held in Seattle July 31 - August 7, 1948. Delegates to the convention represented 4,780 clubs from 43 states, gathered under the motto of "Lifting as We Climb" to promote self-help among women. The opening meeting was held at the People's Institutional Baptist Church, additional meetings and events were held at Plymouth Congregational Church, Garfield High School, and the Central YMCA.

The photographer's note for this negative refers to the event as "Federated Women's Clubs of America convention," a separate group from NACWC, but which may have been involved in the NACWC convention.
