Order an ImageJoe Louis (1914-1981) was heavyweight champion of the world from 1937 to 1949, setting a new world record, and earning Louis a reputation as an American hero. In 1942, Louis joined the Army, and during his service he donated generously from his boxing winnings to Army and Navy relief societies, was part of over 96 boxing exhibitions, and performed for over two million members of the military.
Louis resumed exhibition fighting after his 1949 retirement from professional boxing. This photo was probably taken when Louis was in Seattle for an exhibition match at the Civic Auditorium in January 1950. Louis, in his boxing robe, stands between two young men wearing aprons and hats marked with “Referee.” The young man on the right is Freddie Brown, 1949 Golden Gloves middleweight champion from Seattle.
