Gertrude (Johnson) Peoples, a native of Natchez, Mississippi, moved to Seattle with her family as a teenager where she graduated from Queen Anne High School. She began counseling at-risk high school students in the 1960s. During the racially-turbulent 1970s, she was recruited by the University of Washington to counsel and advocate for black athletes, a role that eventually became UW's Student Athlete Academic Service. Over the years, Peoples went on to receive numerous awards for her work.
