The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, the country's only integrated all-women band, came to Seattle in September 1944. They played twice at the Civic Auditorium and also performed at the Black and Tan. Here, the band plays at the Black and Tan in front of an audience that includes Esther Johnson (far left) and Kline McCurdy (behind her). The woman at center, facing the band, is Anna Mae Winburn, professional singer and "Mistress of Ceremonies" for the band.
