Seattle-born photographer Al Smith was a familiar figure wherever jazz was played around the city. Here, he photographed Louis Armstrong and his band, who played at Seattle's Civic Auditorium on July 17 and 18, 1944. This photo shows Armstrong standing at the microphone, trumpet in hand, at the July 17 performance. Bandstands are just visible behind him, printed with the initials "LA," a trumpet, and a king's crown.
