Order an ImageLabor activist C.L. (Cottrell Lawrence) Dellums (1900-1989) was a porter for the Pullman Company when he was fired in 1927 for his open support of unionization. In 1929, Dellums was elected vice president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and he became president in 1966.
C.L. Dellums and A. Philip Randolph, labor organizer and civil rights activist, visited Seattle together at least twice in the 1940s, speaking at several venues about discrimination against Blacks, particularly against Black workers, and calling for equal opportunity in employment. This photo shows C.L. Dellums at a event at Mount Zion Baptist Church, which Randolph also attended.
