When the first Elephant Car Wash opened at Fourth Avenue and Lander Street in Seattle in 1951, it was the first automatic car wash in Washington State. For the first time, cars received hands-free treatment. The owners opened additional car washes in the region, all with the eye-catching neon signs designed by Bea Haverfield, an area neon designer.

This image shows the rotating Elephant Super Car Wash sign at Battery Street and Denny Way in Seattle’s South Lake Union district. When it closed in 2020, this car wash was the last one in downtown Seattle and had operated for 64 years. The sign was donated to the Museum of History & Industry. A smaller sign was donated to Amazon and stands at Seventh Avenue and Blanchard Street.
