Local Chinese merchant and labor contractor Chin Gee Hee (1844-1929) and a partner built two commercial buildings on the northeast corner of Washington Street and Second Avenue, in Seattle’s original Chinatown. After these were destroyed by Seattle’s 1889 Great Fire, the partners rebuilt them in brick. These were the Phoenix Hotel, facing Second Avenue, and the neighboring Chin Gee Hee Building facing Washington Street. The diagonal extension of Second Avenue in 1928 eliminated the Phoenix Hotel and shaved the corner from the Chin Gee Hee Building.

This image, taken across S. Washington Street at Second Avenue Extension South around 2018, shows the Chin Gee Hee Building with its six-window diagonal corner. At the time, the ground floor was occupied by Statix, an art gallery, gift shop, and music venue.
