Shug performing at Re-bar, Seattle, January 1996
Order an ImageRe-Bar was a nightclub and gay bar open from 1990 to 2020, located at the corner of Howell Street and Boren Avenue in a building that had been occupied by various bars since the mid-20th century. Its stage also hosted live theater and performance art. Re-Bar was popular not just with LGBTQ+ communities but also punks, goths, grungers, and others outside the mainstream. During its life, Re-Bar served as a safe space for LGBTQ+ performers and customers, or anyone else who felt like an outsider.
This January 1996 image shows the band Shug performing at Re-Bar. Shug was started by Tracey Shug in 1993 with bandmates Susan Larsen, Maria Mabra, and Paula Sen. They performed across the US West Coast until 1997.
