When the Beatles performed in Seattle on the third stop of their first official world tour, nineteen-year-old photographer Timothy Eagan had an enviable view of the band from the edge of the stage. Eagan, who grew up in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle, had gotten a press pass from a family friend, and had elbowed his way to the floor to photograph the group, capturing images such as this one of John and Paul singing together. Eagan went on to a career in photography, first as a staff photographer for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and then with an agency in New York. Here, Eagan captures John Lennon and Paul McCartney singing together at one microphone, probably performing one of their familiar harmonies such as that on "If I Fell," which the band performed at the Seattle concert. Lennon and McCartney also complemented each other as the entity known as Lennon-McCartney, one of the most celebrated and successful songwriting collaborations in rock history. Just as John provided the low harmony and McCartney the high on "If I Fell," Paul's songwriting tended to be brighter and John's darker. In his 1980 Playboy Magazine interview, John noted: "He provided a lightness, an optimism, while I would always go for the sadness, the dischords, the bluesy notes."
