When the Beatles performed in Seattle on the third stop of their first official world tour, nineteen-year-old photographer Timothy Eagan had an enviable view of the band from the edge of the stage. Eagan, who grew up in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle, had gotten a press pass from a family friend, and elbowed his way to the floor by the time the Beatles started the first song of their set. Eagan went on to a career in photography, first as a staff photographer for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and then with an agency in New York. This photograph shows George Harrison in one of the Beatles' signature outfits, a single-breasted suit with velvet collar, and wearing the tight-fitting, ankle-high, heeled boots which were associated forever after with the band's name. Here, George is playing guitar in front of the sold-out Coliseum audience, late in the band's set. George played two guitars during the Seattle concert, his 1963 Gretsch Country Gentleman, and the Rickenbacker he plays in this photo. This Rickenbacker 360 12-string electric guitar was given to him in February of that year, when the band was in New York for their first Ed Sullivan show appearance, as a gift from the owner of the Rickenbacker company. Perhaps the band is performing "Hard Day's Night" here, the penultimate song of their 29-minute set, on which George plays his 12-string.
