George Harrison playing guitar at the Beatles concert, Seattle Center Coliseum, August 21, 1964
Contact MOHAI to OrderWhen the Beatles performed at the Seattle Center Coliseum in August 1964, nineteen-year-old photographer Timothy Eagan had an enviable view of the "Fab Four" from the edge of the stage, thanks to the press pass he'd gotten from family friend in the newspaper business. Eagan shot three rolls of film that night, including several portraits of each of the lads, such as this photo of Beatles lead guitarist George Harrison. Here, George plays one of his Gretsch guitars, this one the 1963 Gretsch 6122 Country Gentleman. George owned several Gretsches over the years, as well as many other guitars, including multiple Gibsons, Fenders, and Rickenbackers, as well as a number of other electric and acoustic guitars. After the end of their 1964 tour, which had included innumerable press conferences, George Harrison interviewed himself, asking questions he wished the press had asked, or that were frequently asked by fans. In the interview, published in the November 1964 issue of the Beatles Book Monthly, George asks himself: "Are you the most musical of The Beatles?" George replies: "People have said I am, just because I admit to liking Segovia's guitar playing and they think that's all very highbrow and musical. I believe I love my guitar more than the others love theirs. For John and Paul, songwriting is pretty important and guitar playing is a means to an end. While they're making up new tunes I can thoroughly enjoy myself just doodling around with a guitar for a whole evening. I'm fascinated by new sounds I can get from different instruments I try out. I'm not sure that makes me particularly musical. Just call me a guitar fanatic instead, and I'll be satisfied."
