Seattle was the third stop on the Beatles first official world tour in 1964. On the evening of August 21, the Fab Four played to a crowd of more than 14,000 enthusiastic fans in the Coliseum at Seattle Center. Young freelance photographer and Seattle native Timothy Eagan had managed to get a press pass from family friend Ed Donohoe, editor of the Washington Teamster newspaper. Eagan shot three rolls of film at the concert, elbowing his way to the edge of the stage for an up-close view of the lads. Tim Eagan went on the pursue a professional career in photography in Seattle and New York City. In this photo, a smiling John Lennon plays his black Rickenbacker 325 guitar early in the band's 29-minute set. This guitar was John's second Rickenbacker, and one of several guitars from that maker owned by the three Beatles guitarists. John seems charmingly unconcerned about the audience noise drowning out the band's performance. When asked, in a press interview right before the concert, if he wished "they'd be quiet and let you sing sometimes," John replied "Why? They've got the records."
