Nessim D. Alhadeff (1884-1950) was a Sephardic Jew who immigrated to Seattle in 1904 from the Mediterranean island of Rhodes. He began working in fish markets and by 1907 had set up his own market, Palace Market. Within three years he had helped his six brothers emigrate, and the growing family business was known over time as Palace Fish and Oyster Co., Pacific Fish Co., Whiz Fish Products Co., and Whiz Eardley Fisheries. Seattle's Sephardic Jewish community expanded quickly and in 1918 one of Mr. Alhadeff's brothers, Solomon David Alhadeff (1882-1966), established the city's first Sephardic synagogue, Ezra Bessaroth Congregation, still operating in the Seward Park neighborhood.
This brochure was printed to advertise the services provided by Palace Fish and Oyster Company, and includes a map of fish sources on the West coast, and photographs of the boats being unloaded at the Colman Dock on Alaskan Way. Also included are fish recipes from "world-famed chefs."
