Seattle businessman and inventor Harvey F. “Sandy” Swenson founded Sweden Freezer Manufacturing Company in 1932, and is credited with inventing the milk shake machine. Sweden Freezer is also known for another of its inventions: a new dialysis delivery system developed by Swenson in collaboration with Dr. Belding Scribner of the University of Washington in 1962. The new system used sanitary stainless steel freezer tanks, which cooled the dialysis solution and prevented bacterial growth. Seattle Artificial Kidney Supply Company was founded as the division handling Sweden Freezer Manufacturing's medical operations. Sweden Freezer manufactured several hundred dialysis machines a year during the 1960s.
