The establishment of Students' Army Training Corps (SATC) units during World War I was authorized by the Selective Service Act of 1917, and implemented by the newly created Committee on Education and Special Training of the US War Department. The short-lived SATC program utilized the facilities, equipment, and faculty of colleges and universities to select and train officer candidates and provide technical and vocational training during World War I. Programs on college campuses across the nation were inaugurated in October 1918, and dissolution of the Corps began with the armistice on November 11, 1918.

At the University of Washington, nearly 2000 male students registered for the SATC on campus in the fall of 1918. Men of draft age who entered the SATC program became members of the U.S. Army: wearing uniforms, sleeping in barracks on campus, and receiving a private's monthly pay of $30. Depending on their age at registration, students would remain in college for three to nine months before being sent to camps or forts on the same schedule as civilian men of the same age.

Barracks for the SATC were constructed on the old grounds of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (AYPE), due to the existing sewer facilities. The building shown in this photo was originally built in 1908 as the Forestry Building for the AYPE. In 1913, the Washington State Museum moved in, and remained until 1927.
