Hazel Marjorie (Archibald) Draper (1891-1973) and Norman Silas "Jim" Archibald (1894-1975) were born in Seattle to real estate developer Silas W. Archibald (1864-aft 1952) and Elizabeth Jane (Langille) Archibald (1866-), who had emigrated from Nova Scotia, Canada, after their 1889 marriage. Both Hazel and Norman served in France during World War I. Norman was a lieutenant with the 95th Aero Squadron, U. S. Army, in September 1918 when his SPAD biplane fighter aircraft was shot down behind enemy lines and he was taken prisoner by the Germans. In October 1918, Hazel, a talented pianist and songwriter, joined the American Red Cross in Paris and worked as an entertainer in the Red Cross Hospital Hut Service. Hazel continually sought information on the condition and whereabouts of her brother, finally reuniting with him in Tours, France in early December 1918.

This image shows Hazel's passport and the work permit she was issued for her tenure with the Red Cross from October 1918 through May 1919. After her return to Seattle, Hazel created a scrapbook of photos and memorabilia from her time in France, in which these item appear. She also became a charter member of the Seattle Unit, Women's Overseas Service League, and worked as a staff writer for the Seattle Times before moving to New York around 1921, where she successfully pursued her musical career. In 1926 Hazel married textile machinery manufacturer Eben Sumner Draper Jr (1893-1959) and moved to Boston. After her husband's death Hazel returned to Seattle to live with her brother.
