During World War I, Seattleite Norman S. "Jim" Archibald served as a lieutenant with the 95th Aero Squadron, U. S. Army. On September 8, 1918, his SPAD biplane fighter aircraft was shot down behind enemy lines and he was imprisoned in Villingen (Baden), Germany. On October 10, 1918, Jim wrote a letter to his friend Joseph Waterhouse in London describing the crash and other military activities and asking for a box of food and cigarettes. The letter was forwarded to Joe at his Royal Flying Corps base in Wiltshire.
