Interstate 5 (I-5) is the main Interstate Highway on the West Coast of the United States, and Seattle's largest and widest freeway. The section of I-5 connecting Kent to Seattle to Everett was built between 1960-1966, including the section shown in this aerial photograph taken on August 1, 1963.
The direction of the photograph is looking south, and at the center of the frame the construction of the State Route 520 interchange can be seen, which will eventually link I-5 and 520 via the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge over Lake Washington. Broadway Avenue, a major North-South arterial road, is visible to the east of I-5. Directly west of I-5, the buildings of Seward Elementary School can be seen. Seward opened as the Denny-Fuhrman School in 1893 and is now a designated Seattle Landmark. The school later operated as The Option Program at Seward or TOPS.
John Fraser Vallentyne (1928-2002) was an aerial photographer for The Boeing Co. and a staff photographer for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in the 1950s-1960s.
