In 1938, 33-year-old Seattle native Ivar Haglund opened the city's first aquarium on Pier 54. Soon, entrepreneur Haglund opened a stand selling clam chowder and fish and chips to the aquarium's hungry visitors. Though the stand soon closed, in 1946 Haglund opened his first "official" restaurant, the renowned Ivar's Acres of Clams on Pier 54, the first of several Ivar's establishments.

This menu bears Ivar's motto "Where Clams and Culture Meet and Eat." The menu could be mailed as a souvenir in an illustrated envelope, with a humorous cartoon featuring a drawing of entertainer and folksinger Haglund sitting on the back of a fish playing guitar, wearing his signature captain's hat. Also included in the mailer was a souvenir "Old Settler" placemat, with the lyrics of the Old Settler song, verses of which Haglund used on his radio show.
