J.P. Patches Patches Pal card, Seattle, circa 1965
Order an ImageFrom 1958 to 1981, Seattle entertainer Chris John Wedes (1928-2012) played clown J.P. Patches on KIRO-TV. "The J.P. Patches Show" was only the second show broadcast by KIRO-TV. Despite having only two live actors on screen at most times, Wedes as J.P. Patches and Bob Newman (1932- ) as his "girlfriend" Gertrude, the live improv show was very popular in the Puget Sound area and southwestern British Columbia.
In addition to the long-running TV show, J. P. Patches made frequent fundraising appearances for local charities, especially Children's Hospital. On August 17, 2008 a bronze statue of J. P. and Gertrude was unveiled on N. 34th Street, in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle.
This "J.P. Patches Checklist" show lists ten habits for children to adopt to become an official "Patches Pal."
