On May 11, 1977, a group of about 50 students at Seattle Central Community College (SCCC) held a protest march to demand the immediate hiring of a Chicano counselor. They gathered at SCCC’s south entrance, then marched across the college into the administration building, where they demanded to meet with SCCC’s president, Robert Terry. Terry refused to meet and said that the college already intended to hire a Chicano counselor in September of that year. Protest leader Alfonzo Simiano expressed concern that the number of Chicano students at SCCC had decreased from 220 to 61 in the preceding five years. Terry dismissed these concerns and said that a committee was being formed, including Chicano representation, to discuss problems at SCCC.
