In 1970, some 100 Native Americans and supporters occupied Fort Lawton, a Seattle Army base that had been declared surplus. The group wanted to reclaim what had been part of their historic lands. After being ejected by military police, group members camped nearby, maintaining their rights and involving celebrities in their cause. In 1977, after much negotiation and Congressional involvement, a solution was reached that allowed the establishment of the United Indians of All Tribes’ Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center at Discovery Park.
The United Indians of All Tribes Foundation provides a large variety of culturally sensitive resources, events and programs to Seattle’s urban native population as well as programs for the public. This 1979 poster advertises an Indian Art Mart held at Daybreak Star. Visitors could also enjoy a salmon bake and entertainment.
