Nelson Mandela's Birthday March flier, 1986

Order an Image
This flier advertises a march to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday in 1986 and to protest his imprisonment by the apartheid regime in South Africa. Mandela was freed in 1990 and in 1994 he was elected President of South Africa in its first post-apartheid election. The march started at the South African consulate near Madison Park and ended at the Colman School, which was occupied from 1985 to 1993 by activists in Seattle’s Black community. The occupation led to the foundation of the Northwest African American Museum in 2008.
