Women's Equality Day, celebrated in the U.S. on August 26, commemorates the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment, granting women the right to vote. First celebrated in 1973, the day is proclaimed each year by the United States President, and marked by celebrations, as well as protests and marches.

This flier advertises the August 26, 1978 Women's Rights March in Seattle, with a rally at the Federal Courthouse and march to Pioneer Square. Speakers included Judy Thilman, on defeating Initiative 13, which would repeal city ordinances protecting employment and housing rights for gays and lesbians; Deejah Sherman-Peterson on reproductive freedom; Patricia Benavidez on the Equal Rights Amendment; and Kathy Owen on Affirmative Action. About 450 supporters of women's and gay rights attended the march.

This item is one of many gathered by the Seattle-born author, artist, and chronicler of local drag culture, Donald Charles "Don" Paulson (1933-2012), in a collection he "dedicated to everyone who ever participated in a protest March, attended a Vigil, campaigned for Peace, Justice, Liberation, Human or Animal Rights, saved the Planet, welcomed the New Age, fought against Racism, Sexism, Ageism, Homophobia, and Abuse. And to anyone whose voice wanted to be heard in a world too often refusing to listen."
