"Labor in the Philippines" poster, September 1985
Order an ImageThis poster promotes a presentation about the Philippine labor movement and the Kilusang Mayo Uno (May 1st Movement) or KMU, held on September 24, 1985 at the Labor Temple in Seattle. Maynardo Palarca, leader of the Center of Nationalist Trade Unions In Mindanao (CENTRUM), spoke about the organization's role in a one-day general strike on the island of Mindanao to protest militarization and the extensive presence of corporations on the island. Palarca also spoke about the KMU, a federation of labor unions across the Philippines with 500,000 members. The KMU pushed for higher wages, better working and living conditions, and fought against repression of labor unions and workers' rights. It was also part of a larger movement to overthrow the authoritarian US-backed Marcos regime.
