This is the first issue of “Cascadia Rising,” a newsletter published by the Cascadia Commonwealth Movement (CCM). Cascadia is a region covering western Washington, western Oregon, and parts of northern California and southern British Columbia, and the CCM’s goal was to work for a prosperous, ecologically friendly, and equitable Cascadia. The newsletter also contains more specific demands, including economic independence for women, better funding for higher education, the formation of a community-based regional development bank, and better environmental stewardship. It also condemns the failures and mismanagement of the Washington Public Power Supply System, which at the time was defaulting on billions of dollars of public money for a system of nuclear power plants, most of which were not completed and never produced electricity.
