The celebration of Columbus Day has focused the strong opposition from American Indigenous Peoples protesting the intrusion of Europeans onto their lands. In October 1975, the Survival of American Indian Association called for a teach-in, and a Columbus Day picket line, demonstration, and rally in downtown Seattle. The group’s four-page flier includes an 1812 quotation from Shawnee leader Tecumseh and describes numerous past and recent confrontations.
