Heavyweight boxer Daniel Victor "Boone" Kirkman (1945-) earned his nickname from his father during his childhood in Washington State, where he liked to hike, fish, hunt, and observe plants and animals. Kirkman grew up in Renton, and at age 14 began commuting to Seattle's Cherry Street gym to train in boxing. Kirkman slowly built a reputation at local events, and had his first professional fight in 1966. He retired in 1978 with a record of 36 wins (with 25 knockouts) and 6 losses.

This photo shows heavyweight fighters Boone Kirkman and Ronald "Ron" Lyle (1941-2011) posing together in Seattle after signing a contract for a 10-round fight at the Coliseum (now KeyArena) on September 17. Kirkman lost the fight by technical knockout in the 8th round after a sustaining a deep cut under his left eye.
