The Seattle Samoan Cricket League formed in 1986, organizing games at the Genesee Field in Seattle's Rainier Valley neighborhood. Samoan cricket, or kirikiti, reflects the value of community to the Samoan people, a way to connect with their culture and with one another. Games are attended by extended families, who gather to sing, eat, dance, and cheer for the players at the all-day affairs. The rules differ from British cricket, with larger teams of 20 to 30 players, and pristine white uniforms replaced by the colorful sarong-like uniforms known as lavalava.
