Order an ImageJesse Calvin Wineberry (1955-) grew up in Seattle’s Central District, attended Queen Anne High School, and received a degree in Business Administration from the University of Washington (UW). While in law school at the University of Puget Sound (UPS), he co-founded the campus Black American Law Student Association, and was elected to the Washington State House of Representatives. Mr. Wineberry served five terms in the Washington State House of Representatives from 1985 to 1995, and was the state's first African American to be selected as House majority whip.
This image shows Jesse Wineberry during a speech to students at Ingraham High School in Seattle about the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968). Mr. Wineberry was instrumental in the creation of MLK Day as a Washington State holiday and was a regularly featured speaker at Seattle observances honoring the late civil rights leader.
