On May 21, 1970, during a rally of about 300 students called by the S.U. Student Afro-American Movement for Equality (formerly the Black Student Union) on the campus of Seattle University, several demonstrators broke windows and damaged equipment in the Student Union building. Five students were suspended, and 6 later arrested, including former Black Student Union president Emile Wilson, pictured here in hat, being taken into police custody and accused of "hindering police."

Emile L. Wilson (1951-2013) came to Seattle University at 16 after being accepted into the SU Honors Program and received a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master's degree in Education with course work in Philosophy. During his time at Seattle University, he was the President of the Black Student Union and he helped shape the predecessor of the Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs. In 1974, Wilson became the first Seattle University graduate to win a Rhodes Scholarship; he entered Queens College, Oxford University in 1975. Following the acceptance of his dissertation on Dr. Martin Luther King in 1983/84, Wilson was awarded his Doctorate in Philosophy from Oxford in 1984. Wilson's funeral mass took place in the chapel on the campus of Seattle University.
