In January 1977, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer ran a feature over two days about transgender people. An article titled "Women Trapped in Men's Bodies" told the stories of two transgender women, Thea Williamson and Christina Kempf. The women discussed their pasts and experiences before, during, and after their transitions. An article the following day titled "Mind and Body should Match" discussed the scientific understanding of what was then called "transexualism" and contained advice for parents.

This photo of Thea Williamson accompanied her story about her life as a transgender woman. Williamson decided to live as a woman the day after her 33rd birthday, but she described "feeling like a girl" since childhood. Williamson looked forward to receiving gender affirming surgery and in the meantime she enjoyed no longer having to hide her femininity or fear being caught.
