Ten-year-old Dai Vu, from Vietnam, arrived in the US in August 1979 with his father and two older siblings after living in a Malaysian refugee camp for 5 months. All of the family's money went into the boat passage for the four, and Dai's mother and younger siblings had to be left behind. In Seattle, Dai attended school at Lake City Elementary, where he struggled to understand his lessons and to communicate with his classmates. His uncle, Dat Vu, who fled Vietnam after the fall of Saigon in 1975, was the Vietnamese-English teacher at the school. Dai studied basic English and the culture of the US with other Vietnamese students in his uncle's classroom each day.
